Things that made me feel old...
Jun. 18th, 2011 10:11 amYesterday was conspiring to make me feel old:
Me: So how old do you think is too old to go to University?
Student 1: Really old
Me: OK, can anyone take a guess at a number?
Student 2: 21
Me: ?!
Me: So how old do you think is too old to go to University?
Student 1: Really old
Me: OK, can anyone take a guess at a number?
Student 2: 21
Me: ?!
Student: My Mum brought me all the Harry Potter books.
Me: That was nice of her, we had to wait for JK Rowling to finish writing in between reading them.
Student: That was AGES ago!
Me: ?!
Reading a journal online:
"So I thought I'd give watching Buffy a go, then all of a sudden Seeley Booth pops up on screen"
Me: Angel! Definitely Angel first!
I did then rectify the situation by watching 'The Eleventh Hour' and 'The Beast Below', followed by Castle. Speaking of, is it worth persisting with? The first ep was OK, but not brilliant, and opinions?

Try telling them you didn't always have the internet and watch those reactions. Hilarious.
Castle is totally worth continuing. It's mostly good fun, eventually you get more of a story arc going in the background as well as the fairly easy viewing case-of-the-week style thing. And Nathan Fillion manages to slip in a few Firefly references which is always worth it.

Date: 2011-06-18 08:09 pm (UTC)I started watching for Fillion and kept watching because it's got some of the most believable characters on TV - but that's not just acting, that's incredible writing as well. Give it about.. 3-4, I'd say. It paid off so well. His daughter is probably the most realistic non-stereotyped teenager on network TV, and her relationship with her dad and grandmother is just omg love.
And once you get used to the way the show format runs, I'm sure you'll adore it! I know I do.

Date: 2011-06-18 08:56 pm (UTC)But then, you know, I began watching Bones for David Boreanaz (I love that I can still spell that, yet definitely stumps me every time...), now I still watch it, but ummm, not the best show for well, plot, or characterisation, or actually concluding ANYTHING.

Date: 2011-06-18 09:01 pm (UTC)And I'm not even all the way through Buffy/Angel yet, but if I ever start watching Bones, that is gonna be my thought too.
Castle is on my list of shows I want to watch. So yeah, not really helpful here.

Date: 2011-06-18 09:02 pm (UTC)Pretty sure at least one Firefly/Whedonverse writer was on staff for s1 so that helped.

Date: 2011-06-19 04:24 am (UTC)Castle is my warm hug of a show (though it does get serious sometimes) and has only gotten better over the past three seasons so I'd say stick with it! I started watching for Castle and Alexis -- I love the father&daughter dynamic -- but now it's expanded to all the other characters, especially Ryan and Esposito.

Date: 2011-06-19 08:48 am (UTC)How far through are you now? That was my first fandom and I'm still completely in love with it (although, noticing they were not so good with scene continuity or keeping their cameras/booms out of shot this watch through). Bones is not really worth watching other than for a bit of fluff. Which is required sometimes!

Date: 2011-06-19 01:36 pm (UTC)I'm on the 6th season of Buffy, 3rd season of Angel, a little more than halfway through both. I love them, definitely Buffy more than Angel, but I love that too. It's just so good. Definitely get why everyone loves it so much. I love talking about it, so I posted my thoughts about all the episodes from season 1, and was gonna do the same for the other seasons, but I'm too lazy. Maybe after I finish it all. Tara is definitely my favorite, although I love almost everyone, just because I relate to her in ways I never thought I would relate to a fictional character, and Seeing Red is going to destroy me.

Date: 2011-06-19 01:44 pm (UTC)Seeing Red kills me every time. In fact everything Joss writes on relationships tends to kill me. I've just watched 'Into the Woods' and every time I do I just want Buffy to run that little bit faster, even if I shipped Buffy/Angel before I really knew fandom existed, I still loved her with Riley too.

Date: 2011-06-19 01:49 pm (UTC)Ugh yes. All of this. Although I don't know if I really ship Buffy/Angel. I don't know what I ship. I just want her to be happy. That Angel episode where he became human and they could be together? That broke my heart.

Date: 2011-06-19 02:29 pm (UTC)I'm not sure I'd ship Buffy/Angel if I were getting into it now, but its kind of ingrained into my head permanently. The more grown up part of my head kinda ships Buffy/Riley, because he's strong and dependable and loves her completely. But since when has fandom required a sensible grown up head?
