Tennent is amazing. I knew this already, but he breaks my heart in so many of these scenes. The one in the cafe, just want to give him a huge huge hug and tell him it will all be OK. I loved Wilf so much. He's just this little old grandad but he seems to have this fatherly love for the Doctor, and the Doctor seems to need him. Possibly just because he has no one else. And its nice to have a companign that isn't a young pretty girl... And the 'Silver Cloak' is amazing in its unamazingness. Just people looking, no timetravel or gadgets, just people. Lovve it.
The Time Lords! I had this image of them as this all good doing race that cared for the universe and time, probably because I have never really seen any old who and new who is very nostalgic about them. Now they are quite scary! But something I would like to see more of, and hope they remain through Matt Smith's Doctor.
But the actual episode itself didn't really seem to go anywhere. Just a collection of squee worthy scenes. Part of what I love about series television is the buidl up to the finale, Journeys End was made so much better by the hints put all through the season. And I think that was lost with this collection of specials, because although you do have the build up, there is such a gap between all the episodes that it didn't flow and build as much as I was hoping.
I think I'm reserving judgement until I've seen the second half. And think that this episode will improve with re-watches, purely on the basis of its mythology. Parts of this ep did feel like RTD and David having a huge fandom squee and actually getting to make it, unlike the rest of us that have to stcik to fanfiction. And i don't think thats a bad thing. In the context of Whoverse I think this ep will stand as one of the best. Just a bit tough to watch the first time round.
And annoyingly I will be out of the country New Years day... so iPlayer as soon as I get home!
