Boyzone: Wembley 26th Feb 2011
Guh. They were amazing. Lots of laughing, a little bit of crying and lots and lots of awesome vocals!
Started with the boys stood on platforms backed by purple light. Which already had the backs of my eyes stinging at the sight of just the four of them. It seemed fine when they were all over the stage, but there was something about the 4 of them being together that just twinged. I guess because then you know that Steo isn't just on another part of the stage...
This most likely won't actually flow in order, but never mind!
Began I think with Love is a Hurricane (EDIT: Fail, oddly enough they did not sing LIAH twice but opened with To Late for Hallelujah... sorry!). Such strong vocals. On all of the Brother tracks actually I was amazed by the strength of the vocals. Then into Love is a Hurricane. Ruby, I just love Mikeys voice atm. For me Boyzone has centred around Ronan always, but I have to say that I think it's Mikeys vocals that stick out in this album. It's his songs that I like the most.
Words and when the going gets tough. They all looked very much like they were having fun. For some reason WTGGT was the only song where the lack of Steos vocals jarred. I don't really know why, it's not really a song that I associate with him, but it really did make me catch in my throat again. (Was also very grateful for the lack of army references that accompanied that song on the Back Again tour)
Steos documentary. Surprisingly I was OK through most of it. Up until Ro said that he hoped he was OK, wherever he was now. Then that had tears rolling down my face. Gave it all away, with Steos vocals. Went through that song much the same way as I reacted to the video the first time. Steo beginning it had me in tears. It was so beautiful to hear his voice across the arena, and everyone singing along too. The boys were sat there and I think it was Mikey who just kind of gave the sad-but-remembering kind of smile, tilted his head up and just pointed. Like 'that's him up there' and kind of 'look how much they still love you'. That nearly killed me. But then the other vocals start and the video was playing in the background so you go from the tears and through too them laughing and remembering. So by the end you are still kind of teary, but smiling too. Mikey had most of Steos vocals in the rest, barring the last line. With that look over the shoulder in the video.
Better then, still with steos voice, and pictures up behind the boys. All three of the very much steo centred songs were done with the boys together. Which felt right. It would have been odd to have them scattered about the stage. Followed by One more song, with extracts from what I assume was the final condolence book that went to the boys on the screen. Beautiful as always.
The rest of the boys left the stage then leaving Mikey to do Til the sun goes down alone. So amazing. Truly powerful and beautiful. Like I said I am loving his voice so much. Probably my favourite song from the album. Have it played on repeat many times.
Love me for a reason. Which just makes me laugh watching them do the same dance moves they've been doing since what, 1994? And they really seem to have fun with it too!
No matter what. I'm not sure. For me this would have been better with Steos 'bit' and his vocals. For me this was his song when he was alive, and as good a Jo's vocals were, it would have rung a lot deeper with GIAA.
Love you anyway, lovin' each day and let your wall fall down. Big and fun and over the top, as they should be. Although robots behind them during LED were weird and distracting. Did not like.
Encore had Shane in the B stage and the others walk through the crowd to join him singing Right here waiting. Followed by baby can I hold you. Both awesome. BCIHY particularly. And ending on Life is a Rollercoster. Which is an awesome big fun track to end on. But always strikes me as odd to end on as its not a boyzone song! Yet it does seem to be a favourite with them to end so never mind! I do remember Steo once saying it was his fave to sing live...
Less over the top than Back Again I think, but still good show. Lots of suits. Ro seemed to have a thing about flowers, sporting one rather strange one with his white suit, and a much more normal one with his green suit. All looking very pretty too I might add. Keith did at one point try to get rid of his jacket and nearly end up hitting Mikey with it. Who then tried to help in removing it by kicking it, but only succeeded in hitting the drummer instead... The kids where there, I guess half term! Keith said hi to them all, it's weird to think that his kids are nearly the same age a Ro when Boyzone started. And that they have been together nearly 18 years. I was 4!
It was beautiful and emotional, but amazing. They did it all very well. The part of saying goodbye to steo was kept contained to one part of the show. And I think that was best done in documentary form, it would be too tough for the boys to say goodbye every night. But he was included in every part of the show. They talked about him all the time, told stories and made it quite clear that he was still here with them. Made fun of him for his campness, and the fact that it infected them. Calling them girls names. Stories about stealing golf carts to get to James Bond set, not talking to Shane for teasing him about the possibility of being in Baywatch (playing the part of a lilo...). Playing amongst themselves that none of the others can hit Steos notes, and Ro and Steo always being Louis favourites. And thanking the fans over and over for their support. That there was a huge gap on the stage with them and that it still catches them sometimes. And thanking the fans for still being here.
Hearing Wembley Arena singing along to Gave It All Away with Steos picture and the boys just sat there, looking up. *melts*
